La lutte pour la victoire commence à Aubisque à 125 km de l'arrivée. Lucien Buysse est premier à Aubisque et également au Tourmalet avec plus de 11 minutes d'avance sur l'italien Aymo. Après eux, Bottecchia et Benoit, littéralement figés, vont démissionner. Buysse arrive à Luchon avec 25 minutes d'avance sur Aymo, après 17 heures de vélo.
