Le Tour de France n'a débuté que samedi, mais il est déjà terminé pour certains coureurs après une énorme chute lundi. À mi-chemin de l'étape 3, une vingtaine de coureurs sont tombés après la chute de William Bonnet près de l'avant du peloton. Cycling Weekly a rapporté que "plusieurs coureurs ont été contraints d'abandonner la course" en raison de l'accident. Les organisateurs de la course ont temporairement arrêté l'étape, car "le nombre de médecins qui ont dû rester sur place aurait signifié qu'il était dangereux pour le peloton de rouler devant", selon Nicholas Godden du Daily Mail. Parmi les hors-course se trouve Tom Dumoulin de Giant-Alpecin, qui occupait la troisième place au moment de l'accident, selon le Guardian. Le leader du maillot jaune, Fabian Cancellara, a également chuté et, même s'il a pu continuer, il a perdu du temps et le maillot de leader. Quelques heures après la fin de l'étape, Cancellara abandonne la course avec deux vertèbres fracturées. Chris Froome de Team Sky, qui a terminé deuxième de l'étape, a pris la tête du classement général de la course. Race organizers temporarily halted the stage, as "the number of doctors that had to stay behind at the scene would have meant it was unsafe for the peloton to ride ahead," according to the Daily Mail's Nicholas Godden. Among those out of the race is Giant-Alpecin's Tom Dumoulin, who was in third place at the time of the crash, per the Guardian. Yellow jersey leader Fabian Cancellara also crashed, and while he was able to continue, he lost time and the leader's jersey. A few hours after the stage finished, Cancellara withdrew from the race with two fractured vertebrae. Team Sky's Chris Froome, who finished second in the stage, took the overall race lead.
